Many people think "Mocha" refers to coffee with chocolate, but historically, it was a real place, an ancient port called Mocha on the Red Sea. Around the fifteenth century, Yemen was the first country in the world to cultivate coffee on a large scale. At that time, all beans shipped to Europe and Turkey had to be gathered and loaded onto ships at the port of Mocha. To prove their origin, the burlap sacks were stamped with large "MOCHA" lettering. Over time, all coffee shipped from that era became collectively known as Mocha beans. Although that bustling port has long since been abandoned, the name has stubbornly remained, a romantic tribute from coffee lovers to that age of exploration.
