This antique coffee shop, which opened in 1950 (Showa 25), is the same age as the Shin-Umeda Shokudogai and is located right next to Umeda Station. When visiting these historic coffee shops in Japan, is it for a cup of coffee and their sandwiches? Perhaps it's more accurate to say it's for the smoky atmosphere of the room. Hong Kong implemented an indoor smoking ban a while ago, and the air has become fresher. Here, the scent of coffee mixed with smoke seems to add an extra touch of familiarity. The dim lighting and old silver utensils in the shop bear witness to the passage of time. Taking a sip of coffee and then a deep breath feels like a return to our good old days that we can no longer go back to. The adjacent Shin-Umeda Shokudogai is another entrance to a time tunnel. Every time I go to Osaka, I always make sure to eat something there. I love its long history and its down-to-earth feel. The Shokudogai was established in Showa 25 to help retired employees of the former national railway. The atmosphere is like an old housing estate mall in Hong Kong, with over a hundred eateries. Being near the station, it's a great place for office workers to grab a quick meal – convenient, with many choices, and delicious.
