When talking about Yemeni coffee, one immediately thinks of full-bodied and wild natural-processed beans. Since ancient times, Yemeni coffee farmers have followed ancestral traditional methods of cultivation. Due to Yemen’s rugged terrain and scarce rainfall, local farmers often choose terraced fields or low-lying areas for planting, selecting spots that are less exposed to intense sunlight. Most farmers are poor and cannot afford pesticides, so nearly all coffee is grown using natural organic methods. The Haraz, located between Yemen’s capital Sana’a and Al-Hudaydah, is part of the Sarat mountain range. This batch comes from smallholder farmers in Haraz, named “Shams” in Arabic, meaning “sunlight,” reflecting the pleasant sunny mountain environment of the area. To the smallholder farmers of Haraz, every cup of coffee represents the inheritance of family values and resilient spirit. Overcoming harsh environmental conditions with meticulous cultivation and careful processing is their proud achievement.
